Megasequences and Giant Evidence for the Flood

The concept of megasequences provides a second way that professional geologists use to organize the geologic rock layers across continents for classification and study. Instead of using fossils as the primary means of classifying rock layers, megasequences primarily use the characteristics of the rock layers themselves to organize and understand earth history.

The driving force and unifying factor is the  rise and fall of sea level over presumed long ages. This rise and fall is driven by tectonic forces acting on ocean floors change sea levels everywhere. The conventional evolutionary view sees megasequences as a beautiful picture with high explanatory power; and in some ways it is. But if we look closely and ask serious questions we find that there are a number of quite contrary evidences as well. In fact, there is much about megasequences that demands a sequence of worldwide flooding events that laid down the six megasequences in rapid succession.

Navajo Sandstone – A Flood Deposit ?

For more than a decade a research team has studied the famed Coconino Sandstone which is commonly presented as a the result of  wind blown desert sand dunes. Since the Coconino is so large that it covers part of fourteen states in the Western USA, a desert that large would preclude the idea that most of that geology was generated by a worldwide flood like that in the Bible. The Coconino produced many lines of evidence that indicate the deposition of all that sand was under water. One can read a summary of the details in the current GHCA newsletter for 4/15.

There are several other large crossbedded sandstones in the Western USA so these need to be studied as well. So, the research team has begun work on the Navajo sandstone next. The Navajo sandstone will be familiar to many because it makes up a large part of the canyon walls at Zion National Park which is awe inspiring indeed. The Navajo is important for the same reasons as the Coconino but the two are different is some interesting ways also. The only way to answer the flood question is to diligently do the field work, the laboratory analysis, modeling and publication. Raymond Strom will introduce us to the nature of the Navajo and the problems and opportunities it offers the research team.

Eventually we will gain a more thorough understanding of these crossbedded sandstones and how they were deposited. Even more is the question of where did all of the sand and other minerals come from, and how did it get from that place to its present location and form?

Coconino Sandstone – A Flood Deposit?

Abstract:  The Coconino Sandstone has historically been considered to be a wind deposit (aeolian) in a vast erg or sand sea.  This deposit, which is the third formation down from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, had been presumed to be aeolian based on cursory data.  This conclusion had been based on bed angles, grain size and roundness, and other characteristics thought to be associated with desert environments.  Little actual technical work had been done, however, on the rocks themselves to determine if, in particular, the microscopic data supported this hypothesis.  In the Creation community, Dr. Steve Austin and Dr. Andrew Snelling had looked at the macro features of the Coconino and had concluded that conventional models were inadequate to support the aeolian interpretation.  In 2005, the Flood Activated Sedimentation and Tectonics (FAST) group was formed at the instigation of the ICR and Dr. Austin.  Three individuals were assigned to the project – Dr. John Whitmore, Paul Garner and Raymond Strom, each with a special interest and set of expertise that would be brought to bear.  Initially, the group was uncertain as to what would be found, but as the project proceeded, many amazing surprises surfaced.

This will be a night you will not want to miss, as this represents a complete revamping of a dogmatic evolutionary model.
